Fitness trends for 2019

We all know the age old advice…eat well and exercise three times a week to remain fit and healthy. But when the alarm clock goes off at 6am, the idea of dragging our dishevelled bodies out of bed for an hour at the gym suddenly seems a kin to running an actual marathon.

However, I think we can all agree exercise is still a good thing and fortunately, it doesn’t just come in the guise of a gruelling gym session followed by a protein shake anymore. Believe it or not, fitness can be fun!

From snappy HIIT sessions to aerial acrobatics, we’ve detailed the top fitness trends to hit the scene in 2019, and some of them might just make you rethink hitting that snooze button…

The return of the treadmill

We all know (and envy) that one person who waltzes out the door at 6am for a 10 mile run and comes back an hour later looking like they haven’t even broken a sweat. Let’s face it, these people are few and far between, so for those of us who aren’t built for running in public, you’ll be pleased to know the treadmill is making a big comeback.

They’ve been a staple of the gym for decades and more recently have been given centre stage, with treadmill-centric studios popping up all over the place. So it might be time to dust off those running trainers!

HIIT Hybrids

The HIIT class has become a firm favourite among fitness fanatics over the last few years, and 2019 will see a further shift towards hybrid HIIT classes combining the likes of yoga with high-intensity circuits.

The rise in F45 fitness has been at the forefront of this shift as they run the exact same 45-minute class each day, which alternate between HIIT-style cardio, strength training, or a no-nonsense hybrid mixture of the two.

Test your circus skills

One of the newer trends to come out this year is aerial fitness. These classes will see you suspended from the ceiling by 30ft ribbons, and will seriously work your arms, abs and test your core. Certainly not for the faint hearted but fun nonetheless!

Get fit in under an hour

With high-intensity training becoming more and more popular, gyms have seen a rise in demand for shorter more intense classes, and this is due to continue in 2019. Shorter workouts can be just as effective (if not more) as longer sessions, and with many of us juggling busy schedules, we’re less likely to skip a class if we know we won’t need to dedicate two hours to it! So we’re sure getting your workout done in 45 mins or under is a trend we can all get on board with.

Wellness festivals

Over the past three years, wellness festivals have become big business, and look set to grow even more in 2019.​

From LoveFit (three days of adrenaline-inducing fitness followed by boutique after parties) to BLOK’s seven day fiesta in Bordeaux – there’s a lot to pick from. Others include Sweatlife, Soul Circus, Festival No.6 and FloVibe, which combine great music with healthy eating, mindfulness and workouts such as yoga and Pilates.
